About 10 years ago someone asked me “What would you do if you won the lottery?”. I paused and thought. And I drew a blank. And it recently struck me that I had been so focused on striving and achieving that it had never occurred to me what I would do if I was given all the money/ time/ space in the world. More than that, I had never asked myself the million dollar question “What would you do if you could do anything you wanted?”
Recently I have come to the realisation that under that seemingly simple question are a lot of uncomfortable implications. Like for example, you might feel like you cannot answer that you want a simple life baking cakes and taking the kids to school, or spend your days in a log cabin chopping wood and reading books by the fire or even enjoying your 9 to 5 job and feeling fulfilled by it because really ought to have bigger life goals, do something productive, leave your mark in the world!
Well, I have just realised that I am here to play and enjoy every little and big thing in life without sticking a “worthwhile” or “not worthwhile” label on them. Anything from watching my daughter play, taking a walk in nature, a dance class, baking a cake or cooking a meal and drawing enormous satisfaction from it, meditating. eating a beautiful millionaire shortbread, enjoying a breathtaking landscape, sitting in silence and listening (really listening), crying, laughing, loving…
What about you? Do you have a bucket list? Are you content just as you are? Are you striving towards a goal? Do you think you can achieve just the right balance between Doing and Being?
